Criminals take advantage of collapsed fencing | Highway Mail

CRIMINALS have easy access to a property in New Germany after the fence surrounding it collapsed.

The fence was destroyed after a pipe burst early in April.

The house owner, Sonja Jones said all they appealed for was for the municipality to fill the hole so that their insurance company would be able to erect a new proper fence.

Jones said they understood that the City has been overwhelmed with floods aftermath, but their issue should have been resolved before the tragedy.

“We have a stream running at the back of our house and we can hear the water running whenever it rains. This time, we could still hear the running water days after the rain stopped. That is when we suspected something was wrong. We took pictures over the wall to see what had transpired. It was a burst pipe,” she said.

“They did come to fix it eventually but did not fill the hole, which eventually led to the corner of our fence collapsing,” said the concerned resident.

The day the fence collapsed, Jones said, their security company sent out guards to watch over their home as crime is rife in the area.

Although a temporary razor wire fence has been erected, the house owners said they still feel unsafe.

“Recently, the criminals crawled underneath the razor wire and broke into the garage and stole all our tools,” she said.

According to Jones, each time the City sent out the wrong team to assess the hole and then closed the case.

“I cannot tell you how many people have come to my house, the worst part is that the pipe burst again during the floods, so they need to fix it again.

“The stench coming from it sometimes becomes unbearable, we have tried to get assistance with no luck,” she said.

The eThekwini Municipality did not respond by the time of going to print.
